Hexagonal mesostructured solgel films were synthesized by dip-coating method using the surfactant Brij58 to produce channels into the film, which house the silver nanoparticles. Optical properties of the metallic nanoparticles were studied by UV-Vis spectroscopy, TEM and HRTEM images.

To verify the successful placement of the ruthenium molecule into the silica framework, emission spectra of the complex in mesostructured and amorphous thin films were compared. The observed emission maxima were nearly identical for the structured (λ max =615 nm) and unstructured (λ max =614 nm) films, indicating that the molecule was incorporated into the silica region in both cases. Thin films ofbicontinuous cubic mesostructured silica were formed using the nonionic poly(oxyethylene)-alkyl ether surfactant Brij-56 as a structure-directing agent. The synthesis conditions were chosen such that the estimated volume fraction of surfactant in the silica/surfactant films corresponded approximately to the composition at which the bicontinuous cubic phase occurs in the water/surfactant phase diagram.
